or has the new wave of internet activism that has been created in the last week to fight SOPA and PIPA shifted much of the conversation from being about economic inequality to being about our rights as internet users? Don’t get me wrong, I KNOW these fights MUST be fought. Even still, I can’t help but feel like we’re being pushed away from the root issue (the systemic and institutionalized imbalance of power that allows a small interest group to push something like SOPA and PIPA forward). It doesn’t have to be either/or. We can fight both fights. But as we fight SOPA and PIPA, let’s keep the conversation going about why we live in a society where something like this could even be feasibly implemented? Why do we, as a people, have such little influence on the power structure that the fact that most people are against SOPA/PIPA is seemingly irrelevant to the corporate agenda executed by our politicians? And when we exert our power and influence, who is the government protecting when they fight back? Whose interests do they have? Why? Let’s keep this line of thinking going. It’s revolutionary. By connecting and understanding these issues we can really utilize all the great energy that is being created by this movement both in this battle against the corporate power structure and in others.
